Welcome to our first farmhouse renovation project blog post! James has always been adamant he wouldn’t feature on here but it’s a joint project so he has no choice 😂. If you see this James, (sorry) but I’m proud of what we’ve achieved already!

Glebe Farm House was James’ family home 15+ years ago. More recently has been rented out. We’ve now got our hands on it, to turn the house into our dream country home. We’re sharing our Pinterest-addicted journey as two 20+ year olds doing most of the DIY ourselves and documenting our home improvements.

Here’s a house tour from just 2 weeks into our project. We’re only working on the house 5 evenings a week after work and the occasional day on the weekend when we’re both available. I would LOVE to say we’ll be in by Christmas but James thinks I’m dreaming. Let’s see who’s right in December!

THE FRONT

The garden is split into 3 sections as you can see from the arial image above. There’s a grass area in front of the house, then a picket fence separating the turning circle/parking. Most of the larger part of the garden is covered in overgrown hedgerow & trees with 2 large sheds.

The garden doesn’t look pretty with a full skip outside the front, but I guess that’s all part of the fun of a farmhouse renovation project!

DIY farm house renovation project

The hallway had a desk under the stairs which has given me the idea to do something similar as I work from home. I’ve sanded down the archway as the beautiful wooden trim was covered in wallpaper but I want to bring it back as a feature. This leads to the pantry/utility room on the left and downstairs toilet on the right.

You might just be able to see all the exposed pipework which really bugs me! Thankfully we’ve organised to have a new plumbing system installed which means we will be able to hide these going forward.

I’ve stripped all of the wallpaper downstairs along with the old red patterned carpet runner on the stairs. Next job will be to sand every step and the hand rail as I’m thinking of keeping the exposed wood and replacing the runner with a more neutral wool loop carpet.

PANTRY/UTILITY ROOM

Other than removing all the shelving, hooks & old alarm system, we haven’t done much in here yet. There’s a lot of exposed pipework and cables which we need to get looked at before we can start on our ideas. I’ve stripped the wallpaper which thankfully came off in HUGE sheets as you can see!

There had previously been a gun cabinet installed in the wall which is what the white mark and large bolt holes are from.

KITCHEN

Farm House Kitchen Renovation

The kitchen (yuck!)… I have quite a strong stomach, not many smells or sights can make it feel funny but ripping this out has both of us retching. I even found a potato that looked like it had 10 years worth of mould growing on it!

If you follow us on Instagram, I managed to write ‘200’ to celebrate our follower milestone, in the inch of dirt & dust that sat above the kitchen units. We’re now at 800 so I need to get my thinking cap back on.

James & I are really struggling to agree on the design for this room. I would like sage green coloured units, with solid wooden worktops and an island in the middle of this square space. He would prefer wooden cupboards, granite worktop, no island and instead a large farmhouse kitchen table. Who will win?

It wouldn’t be a true farmhouse renovation without a few arguments over the area I spend the most time in, would it?!

I’m totally obsessed with Sophie Allport, as you can see from this post.

MAIN BATHROOM

Up on the 3rd floor is the main bathroom, have you ever seen anything like it? 😲 The first thing that crossed my mind was trying to get to the sink, over those beams after a few G&T’s!!

We’ve now completely gutted the bathroom (including the mouldy carpet) and are working on what design to go for next. We’re limited due to the low and steep ceiling shape but I want to try make a feature out of the structural beams.

I hope you’ve enjoyed some of the images we’ve shared so far! There are lots more, including a video house tour and daily progress updates on our Instagram. Please join our journey as we’d love to have you on board. I’m sure I will be shedding tears and James will be laughing at me along the way but I keep reminding myself that it will ALL be worth it!
